# Retire an assessment question fairly

A question ID, scoring rules and affected attempts.

Updated October 27, 2026

## Retiring a quiz question, in short

Retiring a question takes a flawed item, such as one with two defensible answers, out of an assessment people have already taken, without quietly changing anyone’s result. Assessment specialists and trainers in workforce programs use it once attempts are on record. Elvina lists every assessment that uses the question; you pick how past scores in your records are treated and write down why, and earlier attempts keep the original rubric. Quizzes and editing questions by hand are available now; the Learning Platform does not store quiz scores.

## What happens on the free demo

- Book 30 minutes. Pick a time with Elvina's team. The demo is free and runs on Zoom.
- Show the team your goal. Bring one role or one procedure. The team shows how Elvina would handle it, using sample materials.
- Agree on the next step. You leave with a plan for the first step and its price. Nothing reaches your team until you approve it.

## Who this is for, and when

An assessment specialist at a community college workforce program finds that question seven on a forklift safety final has two defensible answers. Over two hundred students have already answered it. He needs to retire the question without quietly changing anyone's pass status behind their back.

## How it works in Elvina

A flawed question is marked for retirement and the reviewer sees which assessments use it.

- Open the question in Creation Studio and choose Retire.
- Elvina lists every assessment that uses the question.
- Record the reason. Detailed quiz answers and scores are not stored in Elvina, so if past scores live in your LMS through a SCORM package, decide there how they are treated, for example, give everyone credit for the question or exclude it from the total.
- Confirm; completions already recorded on the Learning Platform stay as they were.

## A worked example

A fictional program, Riverside Community College Workforce Institute, delivers a Forklift Safety Final with twenty questions to its LMS as a SCORM package. The LMS shows 214 answers to question seven. The specialist retires it in Elvina and exports a corrected package, and the LMS administrator excludes it from past totals, so scores there are computed out of nineteen.

- The retirement record names the one assessment that used the question and the reason for retiring it.
- In the LMS, three students moved from fail to pass under the new total, and the administrator listed them for the instructor.
- The corrected package has nineteen questions, so new learners never see question seven.

## What to check before relying on it

Decide how existing scores will be treated before removal. Preserve the historical rubric for completed attempts.

- All assessments using the question are listed.
- The scoring rule is chosen and written down.
- Completions recorded before the retirement stay unchanged.
- Any change in pass status in the LMS is listed by learner for the instructor.
- A replacement question is added if the objective still needs coverage.

## Where a person stays in charge

Elvina does not store quiz answers or scores, recalculate past results, or decide which scoring treatment is fair; that is an academic or compliance decision. It does not notify students of a score change. A person confirms the retirement. Before applying this in a credit-bearing course, check with your registrar or accreditation contact.

## Who this is not for, and when another tool fits

### This is not the right fit if

- You want Elvina to decide which scoring treatment is fair.
- Students must be told about score changes and you expect that to happen without you.
- The course carries academic credit and your registrar has not been consulted.

### Another kind of tool may fit better

- Your current authoring tool, if one designer already builds every course by hand and the team is happy with it.
- A shared drive, when people only need to find a file rather than learn a task.

## Questions

**Q:** Will scores change?

Not in Elvina, which does not store quiz scores. Scores kept in your LMS change only if you choose a rule there that changes them.

**Q:** Can I replace the question instead of retiring it?

Retire the flawed one and add a new one. Editing in place would silently change what the question meant for anyone who already answered it.

**Q:** Is retirement reversible?

The question can be restored from the trash; any score change already made in your LMS stays there.
