# Reorder lessons so practice comes after the basics

A course sequence and the prerequisite relation between lessons.

Updated October 27, 2026

## Put practice after its prerequisites

Reordering lessons changes the sequence inside a module so an explanation arrives before the scenario that tests it. Support leads and course owners use it when new staff fail a practice task because the course asked for the skill before teaching it. Elvina checks prerequisite links, lists the lessons and active assignments the move touches, and updates navigation once you confirm. Lessons already finished stay finished. Reordering lessons and course modules by hand, with progress kept per person, is available now.

## What happens on the free demo

- Book 30 minutes. Pick a time with Elvina's team. The demo is free and runs on Zoom.
- Show the team your goal. Bring one role or one procedure. The team shows how Elvina would handle it, using sample materials.
- Agree on the next step. You leave with a plan for the first step and its price. Nothing reaches your team until you approve it.

## Who this is for, and when

A support team lead at a help desk software company found that new agents were failing the escalation scenario because the course asked them to handle an angry customer before it explained the escalation limits. He needs the explanation moved ahead of the scenario without breaking the completion rules for the 30 agents who are halfway through.

## How it works in Elvina

The explanation of escalation limits moves before the customer scenario that tests them.

- The lead opens the course in the Learning Platform and drags Lesson 6, Escalation Limits, ahead of Lesson 4, the customer scenario.
- Elvina checks the prerequisite links and lists which lessons reference the moved one and which active assignments are affected.
- He reviews the impact list, decides that in-progress agents keep their completed lessons, and confirms the new sequence.
- Elvina updates navigation and completion rules and flags the course for a short re-review by the content owner.

## A worked example

A fictional vendor, Northstar Desk, runs a nine-lesson Tier 1 Support course. Lesson 4 is a branching scenario with a refund request. Lesson 6 explains the refund threshold an agent may approve alone. Thirty agents from the March cohort are between lessons 3 and 7.

- Escalation Limits now sits as Lesson 4, and the scenario follows as Lesson 5 with its prerequisite satisfied.
- Agents who had already completed the scenario kept their credit, and those on Lesson 3 saw the new order the next morning.
- The scenario pass rate in the next cohort became the metric the lead chose to watch.

## What to check before relying on it

Recheck navigation, completion rules and active assignments. A sequence change may require a new review for existing learners.

- Next and Previous navigation follows the new order on every lesson page.
- Completion rules still require every lesson, and no learner was marked complete or incomplete by accident.
- Cross-references such as 'as covered earlier' still point to content that appears earlier.
- The content owner's re-review is recorded before the sequence is visible to new enrollments.

## Where a person stays in charge

Elvina reorders and reports the consequences; it does not decide pedagogy or judge whether the scenario is fair. Changing sequence for learners already in progress can confuse them, so the platform shows the impact before anything is saved. A course with certification requirements may need a formal re-approval the platform cannot grant.

## Who this is not for, and when another tool fits

### This is not the right fit if

- You need a lesson moved into another module rather than reordered within one.
- You want Elvina to decide the right teaching sequence for you.
- The course needs formal re-approval from an outside body before any change.

### Another kind of tool may fit better

- Your current authoring tool, if one designer already builds every course by hand and the team is happy with it.
- A shared drive, when people only need to find a file rather than learn a task.

## Questions

**Q:** Will learners in progress lose their place?

No. Completed lessons stay completed. Their next lesson is whatever now follows their last completed one in the new order.

**Q:** Can I reorder lessons across modules?

Moving a lesson into another module is a different operation. Reorder lessons works within a module; use Reorder modules for structure above that.

**Q:** What does the content owner re-review after lessons are reordered?

Cross-references and navigation. Phrases such as “as covered earlier” must still point to content that now comes first, Next and Previous must follow the new order, and completion rules must still require every lesson before new enrollments see the sequence.
