# An eLearning Authoring Tool When Nobody on Staff Builds Courses

An eLearning authoring tool is software for building training modules that run in an LMS or a browser. This comparison of eLearning development tools is for operations and training leads who need courses about their own work but have no course designer on staff.

## What an eLearning authoring tool is

An eLearning authoring tool is the software a course designer uses to build interactive modules for an LMS or a browser, with slides, questions and media. This page is for operations and training leads who need courses about their own work and have nobody to build them. From your SOPs, manuals and recordings Elvina builds the module, its quiz and a one-page job aid, adds an avatar video lesson if you want one and waits for an approver; packaging as SCORM, xAPI or MP4 is available now.

The kinds differ on where the content comes from, who checks it and who keeps it current after a change.

## What happens on the free demo

- Book 30 minutes. Pick a time with Elvina's team. The demo is free and runs on Zoom.
- Show the team your goal. Bring one role or one procedure. The team shows how Elvina would handle it, using sample materials.
- Agree on the next step. You leave with a plan for the first step and its price. Nothing reaches your team until you approve it.

## What to look for

Authoring tools are usually sold on templates and interactions. Without a designer on staff, five plainer questions decide whether courses get built at all and stay right. According to NIST, generative AI can confidently produce false content, a risk NIST calls especially relevant to long-form output and to work that needs domain expertise.

- Source of content: a blank canvas, a prompt about a general topic, or your own SOPs, manuals and recordings.
- Review: who checks each module against how the work is really done before anyone is assigned it.
- Export: SCORM or xAPI packages for an LMS, MP4 for screens and phones, or a format that plays only inside one tool.
- Upkeep: what happens to a module when a step, a product or a policy changes.
- Staffing: whether you need a trained designer, an editor with spare hours or only a reviewer who knows the work.

## Where most tools stop

The table compares five kinds of authoring as checked on October 2, 2026. It describes kinds, not products, so test each claim on one real module before you commit. Export claims are easier to read with the standard in mind. The IEEE publishes xAPI as standard 9274.1.1-2023, which sends records of learning activity to a learning record store.

Five kinds of eLearning authoring, checked October 2, 2026.

| Kind | Where content comes from | Who reviews | Export | After a change | Who you need |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Desktop authoring | A designer builds slides, interactions and quizzes | Your experts, if the designer asks them | SCORM or xAPI in most tools, video in some | The designer reopens the source file. | A trained designer. |
| Cloud authoring | Your team builds in a browser, often from templates | Reviewers comment inside the tool | SCORM or xAPI in most tools | An editor fixes the module and publishes it again. | An editor with time. |
| Editor inside an LMS | Your team types into the LMS course builder | Whoever has admin rights | Often none, so the course stays in that LMS | Edit it in place. | An LMS admin. |
| AI course generator | A topic prompt or one uploaded file | Whoever made it, if anyone | It varies, so check before you build | Make it again, then check it again. | A reviewer who knows the work. |
| AI employee (Elvina) | Your SOPs, files and recordings in Company Knowledge | A named approver signs off before release | SCORM, xAPI and MP4 (available now) | New drafts from the new version, approved by a person. | A reviewer who knows the work. |

## How Elvina approaches it

Elvina starts where a good designer would: with what your company already knows. You add SOPs, manuals, slide decks and short recordings to Company Knowledge, each with a named owner. In Creation Studio she drafts the course with its quizzes and job aids, plus a video lesson with an avatar. An approver edits and signs off before release. Until each step is confirmed for Elvina, our team runs it with you on the platform.

- Courses, lessons, quizzes, job aids and avatar video lessons drafted from your sources (available now).
- Translation for staff who learn more easily in another language (available now).
- SCORM and xAPI packages for your LMS, and MP4 files for screens and phones (available now).
- Groups, assignment and progress on the Learning Platform if you have no LMS (available now).

## When another tool fits better

A desktop tool is the right call when a trained designer builds branching scenarios or software simulations. Cloud authoring suits a team of editors who share templates and review in one place. An LMS editor is enough for short notices that never leave that LMS.

A course generator can rough out a general topic, but an expert should check every line: it works from a prompt or one file, with no approved source set and no named reviewer behind it. Elvina fits when the content must come from your own work and nobody has the hours to build it. We do not promise to import or play SCORM packages built in other tools, so keep those in the LMS that runs them today.

## A worked example

A fictional RV dealership with two lots walks every buyer through the coach at delivery. The steps live in a thick binder and with a delivery manager who has done the job for years. The sales director once bought a desktop authoring tool, but nobody found time to learn it.

- The director adds the delivery binder, the hookup checklist and a recorded walkthrough to Company Knowledge.
- Elvina drafts a delivery course with four lessons, a quiz for each and a one-page job aid for the water and power hookups.
- The delivery manager fixes the generator steps, and the director approves the course.
- The dealership's LMS already holds its HR records, so the director uploads the course there as a SCORM package; the walkthrough also goes out as an MP4 for phones.
- When a new model year moves the hookup panel, the manager records the change and approves the new lesson before release.

## Who Elvina is not for, and when another tool fits

### Elvina is not the right choice if

- A trained designer builds branching scenarios or software simulations.
- You need to import or play SCORM packages built in other tools.
- Your modules are short notices that never leave one LMS.

### Another kind of tool may fit better

- A desktop authoring tool, for a designer who builds simulations.
- Cloud authoring, for a team of editors sharing templates.

## Questions

**Q:** What is an eLearning authoring tool?

An eLearning authoring tool is software for building training modules, such as lessons, quizzes and interactions, that run in an LMS or a browser. Desktop and cloud tools assume someone designs the course. Editors inside an LMS keep courses in that system. Elvina drafts from your own sources, and a person approves the result.

**Q:** How is Elvina different from an AI course generator?

A generator writes from a prompt or one uploaded file, with no approved source set behind it, so a course can sound right and still miss your steps. Elvina drafts from the approved sources in your Company Knowledge, and a named person approves each piece before release. The course creation page walks through that task step by step.

**Q:** Can Elvina export SCORM and xAPI?

Yes. Approved courses export as SCORM or xAPI packages for an LMS, and video lessons as MP4 files, all available now. Test one package in your LMS before a full rollout, because each system reads packages in its own way.

**Q:** Do I need a course designer to use Elvina?

No designer is required, but you do need a reviewer who knows the work and can say what is wrong in a draft. Today our team runs the course build with you on the platform. Elvina doing that work on her own is planned, not available today.
