# Hire for attitude, train for skill: I write the skill ladder

ELVINA · HIRE FOR ATTITUDE, TRAIN FOR SKILL

Hiring friendly, reliable people pays off only if the skills arrive on a schedule. I write a skill ladder for each role with you: levels from the first shift to fully independent, the tasks that mark each level, and a check someone watches before a person moves up. You decide what each level is worth.

## Attitude gets them in. A ladder gets them skilled

Without a ladder, training happens whenever someone has a free minute, and nobody can say what a new person can do yet. Some get thrown in too early, others stay on easy work for months. A short, written ladder fixes the order and makes the next step visible from the start.

## When the skills never come

### “Nobody agrees on what skilled means here.”

Each level names the tasks a person does without help, in plain words you approve.

### “It depends on who’s on shift.”

Lessons and a job aid for every level, so the patient trainer and the busy one teach the same thing.

### “Good people leave because they feel stuck.”

The whole ladder is visible from the first day, so people see where they are going.

## From a friendly hire to a skilled one, level by level

In the Department of Labor's Registered Apprenticeship programs, apprentices earn progressive wages as their skills and productivity increase, with structured on-the-job training that includes instruction from an experienced mentor.

### Levels in plain words

With you and your most skilled person, I name the levels of a role and the tasks each one requires.

### Lessons for each level

Short lessons and a job aid per level, drafted from an interview with that person. You approve every level.

### A check to move up

A practice task your senior person watches before anyone opens the next level.

### Seen from the start

Every new hire sees the whole ladder and where they stand on it.

### Stuck shows up early

When someone stalls on a level, their manager sees it on the ladder, so it turns into more practice or a better-fitting role, not a year of silence. Alerts from me are planned, not available today.

## A detailing shop that hires without experience

You said: "I hire friendly people, then the good ones quit because they feel stuck." I start with the ladder. Example · 1 detailing shop, 8 people

- Week 1 4 levels named with your senior detailer: prep, interior, exterior, full detail
- Week 2 2 or 3 lessons and a job aid per level drafted
- Week 3 You approve the levels and tie a pay step to the full-detail check
- Week 4 New hires see all 4 levels on their first day
- Week 9 Your senior detailer watches the first exterior check

## Who does what

### You

Approve the levels and decide what each one is worth in pay or responsibility.

### Your senior person

Describes each level once and watches the checks.

### Your manager

Gives more practice when someone stalls.

### Me

Write the ladder and its lessons. Your managers mark who is on which level; alerts about who is stuck are planned, not available today.

Whom you hire, promote and pay stays with you. A person watches every level check; a quiz never decides it.

## What working with me takes

### You send

The role, a short talk with your most skilled person about each stage of the job, and any checklists you use.

### You get

A skill ladder with lessons and a watched check for each level, ready for your next hire.

### Your time

We agree up front how much of your time the interview and approvals take, and what else you and your managers do.

### Who helps

I prepare the materials. My team sets me up, supports your account and runs your demo. A person confirms every meeting and every payment.
