# Job status: understand a background task

Understand a background task's state. The task ID, start time and supported status view in the actual product.

## When you need this

A course creator or a coordinator who started a long operation in Creation Studio, such as a video render, a SCORM export or a translation, and is now watching a spinner. Usually there are ten minutes left before a review meeting. The risk is clicking the same action twice and getting two exports.

## Steps

A status check distinguishes queued, running, awaiting approval, failed and completed, with a result location when completion is verified.

- In the Web workspace, open the activity or tasks panel, where each background task appears with a name, a start time and a state.
- Find your task by its name or ID and read the state: queued, running, awaiting approval, failed or completed.
- If the state is awaiting approval, open the task to see what needs a person's decision; if it is failed, read the message before doing anything else.
- When the state is completed, follow the result link to the artifact and confirm the file opened.

## What you should see

A fictional dental group's training coordinator, Ravi, exports a SCORM package of the infection control module for their outside LMS. He also queued a Spanish dubbing job for the same module, which waits for the compliance lead to approve the translated script.

- The tasks panel lists two rows: SCORM export, completed with a result link, and Spanish dubbing, awaiting approval with the approver's name.
- Opening the completed row shows the package filename, its size and the time it finished.
- Ravi downloads the package once and leaves the dubbing job untouched until the compliance lead acts.

## What to check before relying on it

Do not retry a consequential action just because a response is slow. Ask the owner to reconcile an uncertain state first.

- Every long operation you started appears in the tasks panel with a readable state.
- A completed task has a result location you can open, not just a green label.
- No consequential task was retried while its state was still running or unknown.

## If it does not work

If it does not work: refresh the tasks panel once and check the start time, because a task that appears stuck may be queued behind others. If a task shows failed with no message, or has run far longer than similar tasks, note the task ID and time and send both to your workspace owner. Do not restart an export or a delivery just because the response is slow.

## Questions people ask

**Q:** Will a failed task charge credits?

Your workspace's usage list shows what was consumed. Check it there rather than assuming.

**Q:** Can two people watch the same task?

Yes, anyone with access to the workspace can see the tasks panel. Only the named approver can release a task from awaiting approval.
