# Add a new lesson only where the course has a gap

The current course, newly required task and prerequisite map.

Updated October 27, 2026

## Add learning only where a gap exists

Expanding a course with a new lesson means adding a separate unit when a new task has its own decision, practice and escalation, instead of squeezing a paragraph into an old lesson. It helps training leads whose course is already assigned to many people when the business adds a task. Elvina compares the task with the existing lessons, recommends a new lesson or a revision, and drafts the addition with its own objective and practice; adding it to the assigned course and keeping prior completions are available now.

## What happens on the free demo

- Book 30 minutes. Pick a time with Elvina's team. The demo is free and runs on Zoom.
- Show the team your goal. Bring one role or one procedure. The team shows how Elvina would handle it, using sample materials.
- Agree on the next step. You leave with a plan for the first step and its price. Nothing reaches your team until you approve it.

## What you bring and what Elvina returns

| You bring | Elvina returns, for your approval | Status |
|---|---|---|
| An assigned checkout course and a new returns task | A recommendation: a separate lesson or a revision, and where it fits in the course | available now |
| The approved returns procedure: paste it or attach a .txt file in the conversation with Elvina | A separate returns lesson drafted around its goal, practice and escalation step | available now |
| The list of people already assigned the course | Their earlier completions kept, with the new lesson shown as still to do | available now |

## Who this is for, and when

A store training lead at a regional pharmacy chain built a solid checkout course last year. Now the company allows returns of over-the-counter products at the register, and cashiers have no training for it. She has to decide whether this is a paragraph added to an existing lesson or a new lesson with its own practice, and what happens to the 210 cashiers already assigned to the course.

## How it works in Elvina

A new lesson addresses handling returns after the original course covered only normal checkout.

- She describes the new task and links the Register Returns Procedure from Company Knowledge, along with the current course outline.
- Elvina compares the new task to existing lessons in Creation Studio and recommends a new lesson, explaining why the task does not fit as a revision.
- Elvina drafts the lesson with its own objective, practice question and source link, and proposes where it sits in the sequence.
- She reviews the placement, checks the impact on learners already assigned, and publishes the expanded course to the Learning Platform.

## A worked example

A fictional chain, Maple Street Pharmacy, has 34 stores and a five-lesson course called 'Front Register Basics' assigned to all cashiers. The new source, Register Returns Procedure v1, covers verifying purchase, refund method and when to call a pharmacist. No existing lesson mentions returns.

- A recommendation to add lesson six, 'Process a Register Return', because the task has a distinct decision path and its own escalation rule.
- A draft lesson with one practice scenario about a return without a receipt.
- An impact note showing that 143 cashiers completed the original course and will see one new required lesson rather than a reset.

## What to check before relying on it

Explain why this is a new lesson rather than a small revision. Recheck the path for learners already assigned.

- The reason for a new lesson rather than an edit is written in the revision note.
- The new lesson has its own objective, source link and practice item.
- The learner path for people already assigned is stated: what they must do and what stays complete.
- Prerequisites for the new lesson are set and enforced.

## Where a person stays in charge

Elvina proposes the placement and drafts the lesson; the training lead decides where it goes and whether existing completions stand. It will not silently reset progress for 210 people. If the new procedure conflicts with an earlier lesson, Elvina flags the conflict for the source owner instead of resolving it by guesswork.

## Who this is not for, and when another tool fits

### This is not the right fit if

- The change touches one step, so a short revision is enough.
- The new procedure conflicts with an older lesson and nobody has settled which is right.
- You want to restart everyone on the course from zero.

### Another kind of tool may fit better

- A course library, when the topics are general skills rather than your own procedures.
- An instructional designer, for a large program with branching scenarios or live workshops.

## Questions

**Q:** How does Elvina decide between a revision and a new lesson?

It looks at whether the task has its own decision, practice and escalation. If it does, that argues for a lesson; if it changes one step, a revision is enough. You make the final call.

**Q:** Will cashiers who finished the course be marked incomplete?

Only if you choose that. The default is to add one new required item and keep prior completions intact.

**Q:** Where does the new lesson go in the course?

Elvina proposes a spot based on what the task depends on, for example right after the basics it builds on, and the training lead decides. Prerequisites are set so nobody reaches the new lesson before the ones it needs.

**Q:** Can I send the new procedure as a file?

Yes. Reading a .txt or .md file of up to 20 KB and 20,000 characters, attached in the conversation with Elvina on this page, is available now; the new lesson is drafted from that text. Other formats, such as PDF or Word, are rejected with an explanation, so paste the procedure or the section you need instead.
