# Rename learning content but keep its identity

The exact content item and approved new title.

Updated October 27, 2026

## Change a title without changing its identity

Renaming learning content is giving a lesson or course a title that says what it teaches while it stays the same item, with its assignments and completion history attached. It suits training supervisors who inherited names like Module 1 to Module 9 that nobody can search. Renaming or reordering any module by hand is available now, and Elvina lists every place the old title still appears, such as narration, job aids and links. A person updates the references outside the platform.

## What happens on the free demo

- Book 30 minutes. Pick a time with Elvina's team. The demo is free and runs on Zoom.
- Show the team your goal. Bring one role or one procedure. The team shows how Elvina would handle it, using sample materials.
- Agree on the next step. You leave with a plan for the first step and its price. Nothing reaches your team until you approve it.

## What you bring and what Elvina returns

| You bring | Elvina returns, for your approval | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Numbered module titles that say nothing about the content | New titles that say what each module teaches, renamed in place | available now |
| The completion history attached to the renamed lessons | Assignments and completions still on the same lessons after the rename | available now |
| The job aid and narration that still use the old names | Each spot outside the course where an old title remains, for someone to fix | available now |

## Who this is for, and when

A warehouse training supervisor at a third-party logistics operator inherited a course whose lessons are named 'Module 1' through 'Module 9'. Associates cannot tell which one covers damaged-freight handling, and the search box returns nothing useful. He wants to give each lesson a title that says what it teaches without creating a duplicate, breaking a link in the safety binder, or losing the completion history behind it.

## How it works in Elvina

An ambiguous 'Module 2' becomes 'Handle delivery exceptions' while its history stays attached.

- He selects the exact lesson in Creation Studio and enters the approved new title, with the old title kept in the revision note.
- Elvina checks where the old title is referenced (course outlines, narration, job aids, links from other lessons) and lists each reference.
- The rename is applied to the same item, so assignments and completions on the Learning Platform stay attached.
- He reviews the reference list and updates the narration line and the printed binder link himself.

## A worked example

A fictional operator, Granite Peak Logistics, runs two distribution centers. The lesson 'Module 2' teaches how to document and segregate damaged inbound freight. The supervisor renames it 'Handle Damaged Inbound Freight'. The lesson has 88 completions and is linked from a laminated dock checklist by its old name.

- The lesson now appears as 'Handle Damaged Inbound Freight' in the outline, search results and learner views, with the same item identity.
- A reference list showing one narration line that says 'Module 2' and one external checklist link, both flagged for the supervisor.
- All 88 completions and the two open assignments remain on the renamed lesson.

## What to check before relying on it

Check search, links and references in narration. A rename must not silently create a second assignment.

- The renamed lesson has the same identity and history as before, not a new copy.
- No second assignment was created by the rename.
- Every reference to the old title is listed and either updated or acknowledged.
- Search returns the lesson under its new title.

## Where a person stays in charge

A rename changes the label, not the content or the completion rule. Elvina will not rename an item silently in narration or in printed material outside the platform; it lists those references for a person to handle. If two lessons would end up with the same title, Elvina asks before applying the change.

## Who this is not for, and when another tool fits

### This is not the right fit if

- The content itself is wrong, not only its title.
- You want old titles changed silently in printed binders and recordings.
- You need two copies of the lesson under different names.

### Another kind of tool may fit better

- A course library, when the topics are general skills rather than your own procedures.
- An instructional designer, for a large program with branching scenarios or live workshops.

## Questions

**Q:** Will learners who completed 'Module 2' see it as complete under the new name?

Yes. Completion is tied to the item, and the item did not change. Only its title did.

**Q:** Can I rename a whole course at once?

Yes, one item at a time with a single review at the end. Each rename records its old and new title.

**Q:** Will a rename break links people already use?

Not inside the course, because the lesson stays the same item and keeps its history. References elsewhere, such as a printed checklist or a narration line that says the old name, are listed so a person can update them.
