# Employee onboarding: I build each new hire's first weeks

ELVINA · ONBOARDING

Tell me the role and the start date. I turn what your most experienced people know into a day-by-day plan: short lessons, practice on real tasks, a one-page job aid and a check with your manager before anyone works alone. You approve every piece, and your manager decides who is ready.

## What working with me takes

### You send

The role, the start date and the procedures or checklists you already have.

### You get

A day-by-day plan with lessons, practice and a job aid, assigned before day one, and a check with your manager.

### Your time

We agree up front how much of your time the interview and approvals take, and what else you and your managers do.

### Who helps

I prepare the materials. My team sets me up, supports your account and runs your demo. A person confirms every meeting and every payment.

Example · onboarding plan, cashier

### New cashier: the first two weeks

## Where onboarding falls apart

### “Every manager onboards their own way.”

One plan for the role, the same at every location, with a job aid people keep at hand.

### “Day one is me talking all morning.”

I write down what you say once, so day one is about real work.

### “They finish the course and still can't do the job.”

Every week ends with a check on a real task, not a quiz alone.

## From the start date to working alone

The plan is assigned before day one. In OPM's orientation roadmap for federal agencies, pre-boarding begins 14 to 21 days before arrival: a sponsor or buddy calls the new employee, who learns what will happen on the first day.

### The role and the date

Who starts, where, and the first day they work.

### What good looks like

Your manager names the tasks a new person must do alone, and by which week.

### Day by day

Day one, the first days and the first two weeks, from your procedures. Managers get a longer plan.

### Practice and a job aid

A practice task for each lesson and one page to keep at the station.

### Ready for your approval

Once you approve them, your manager assigns the welcome and the first lesson. Sending them on the schedule you agree to, with reminders, is planned, not available today.

### A check on the real task

Your manager watches the work and decides who works alone.

## Three new cashiers in two stores

You said: "Three cashiers start on the 9th, and our onboarding lives in my head." I start with the register. Example · 2 stores, 3 cashiers

- Jun 5 Plan approved. Welcome message and day-one job aid ready; sending them is planned, not available today
- Jun 9 Store walk, the register lesson and a practice sale with a shift lead
- Jun 10 Returns and exchanges, from your procedure
- Jun 13 Quiz on the week. A reminder to one who has not started, as agreed (planned, not available today)
- Jun 20 Shift check: your store manager decides who works the register alone

## Who does what

### You

Name the role and the date, and approve the plan.

### Your experienced staff

Show the hardest task once and mentor the new person.

### Your manager

Watches the real task and decides who works alone.

### Me

Write the plan, the lessons and the job aid. Sending reminders and tracking each person are planned, not available today.

## Questions owners ask about onboarding

**Q:** What are the steps of an employee onboarding process?

The role and the start date; the tasks your manager says a new person must do alone, and by which week; a day-by-day plan from your procedures; a practice task and a one-page job aid for each lesson; your approval; and a check on the real task, where your manager decides who works alone.

**Q:** How do I know a new hire is ready to work alone?

Your manager names the tasks a new person must do alone, and by which week, then watches the real task and decides. Every week ends with a check on a real task, not a quiz alone.

**Q:** Will you send the welcome message and reminders?

I prepare the welcome message and the day-one job aid. Once you approve them, your manager assigns the welcome and the first lesson. Sending them on the schedule you agree to, with reminders, is planned, not available today.
