# Help a new manager understand the job

Role responsibilities, decision authority, team context and current policies.

## What is new manager onboarding with Elvina?

New manager onboarding with Elvina gives a newly promoted manager a first-month path through routine approvals, one difficult conversation and when to escalate a decision. Operations leaders who promote from within use it from the promotion date. Elvina builds the path from your written role description, authority matrix and HR policies, and the HR director approves it. A progress digest to the promoting leader is planned, not available today; today that leader checks completions in the workspace. Answers to the new manager in chat are planned, not available today.

## What happens on the free demo

- Book 30 minutes. Pick a time with Elvina's team. The demo is free and runs on Zoom.
- Show the team your goal. Bring one role or one procedure. The team shows how Elvina would handle it, using sample materials.
- Agree on the next step. You leave with a plan for the first step and its price. Nothing reaches your team until you approve it.

## Who this is for, and when

A VP of operations at a commercial landscaping company just promoted a crew lead to branch manager. The new manager knows the work but not the job: what she can approve, when to escalate, and how to handle a hard conversation. The trigger is the promotion date. He wants a first-month path that introduces the role without pretending an introduction proves readiness.

## How it works in Elvina

A first-month path covers routine approvals, difficult conversations and where to escalate decisions outside authority.

- The VP adds the Branch Manager Role Description, the Decision Authority Matrix, and current HR policies to Company Knowledge.
- Creation Studio drafts a four-week path covering routine approvals, one difficult conversation scenario, and a lesson on escalating outside authority.
- The HR director reviews the difficult-conversation scenario and the policy references, then approves the path.
- The VP assigns one week at a time on the Learning Platform, with a check-in between the VP and the new manager after each week.
- The new manager uses the Web workspace to look up the authority matrix when a real decision comes up.

## A worked example

Take a fictional company, Greenway Grounds Management, promoting one crew lead to run its Tacoma branch. Sources are the Branch Manager Role Description, the Decision Authority Matrix, revision 5, and the current HR policy set. The path runs four weeks with a weekly check-in.

- A four-week path was approved covering approvals, one difficult conversation, and escalation rules.
- The new manager looked up the authority matrix three times in the first month for real decisions.
- The HR director joined the week-three check-in for the difficult-conversation debrief.

## What to check before relying on it

Distinguish introductions from demonstrated managerial readiness. Human support remains necessary for sensitive people decisions.

- Each of the four weeks has a completed module and a logged check-in with the VP.
- The authority matrix referenced in the path matches the revision currently in force.
- The new manager can state where to escalate a decision outside her authority when asked.

## Where a person stays in charge

Elvina assembles the first-month path from approved sources; it does not assess whether someone is ready to manage. Introductions are not demonstrated readiness; the VP judges that through check-ins and observation. Performance and discipline decisions require human support from HR. Policies must be current before the path is built.

## Who does what in new manager onboarding

| Role on your team | What the person keeps | What Elvina drafts | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| [HR generalist](/elvina/hr-recruiter) | Decides who is hired, when a new person starts and when they work alone | A plan for the first few days in each role and a readiness check for new hires | available now |
| [Trainer](/elvina/coach) | Coaches on the floor and judges whether the work is done right | Job aids and short quizzes for the task; the workspace shows who has completed them | available now |
| [Line manager](/elvina/coach) | Approves what reaches the team and follows up with anyone who falls behind | A progress digest by person and role | planned, not available today |
| [Instructional designer](/elvina/learning-team) | Sets the learning goal and checks the method and the wording | Draft lessons, courses and quizzes from your own documents | available now |

Nothing Elvina drafts reaches your team until a person on your side approves it.

## What Elvina does not do, and when another tool fits

### Elvina does not

- Assess whether someone is ready to manage; the VP judges that through check-ins.
- Make performance or discipline decisions; those need human support from HR.
- Update the authority matrix or HR policies; their owners keep them current.
- Approve the path; the HR director reviews the conversation scenario first.

### Another tool fits better when

- The procedure itself is still being decided: settle it first, then train on the approved version.
- You need payroll, scheduling or an HR system of record: keep the one you have.
- A quick poll after a meeting is all you need: a survey form is enough.

## Questions

**Q:** Can we reuse the path for the next promotion?

Yes, as long as the role description and authority matrix have not changed. If they have, the owner updates the sources and HR reviews the edits first.

**Q:** Does the new manager see other managers' progress?

No. The Learning Platform shows each manager only their own path. The VP sees progress across his group.

**Q:** Can the path include our own escalation contacts?

Yes, if they are written in the decision authority matrix or another approved source. Elvina takes escalation steps only from those documents, so a contact missing from the matrix will not appear until its owner adds it.

**Q:** Can a manager hired from outside use the same path?

Yes, with review. An external hire may need more company context than a promoted crew lead, so the owner can add sources such as team structure or customer policies, and HR approves the changed path before it is assigned.
