IN SHORT

Rebuilding a training course, in short

Rebuilding a training course is starting a new version when patches no longer help: the sources have moved on, the lesson order follows screens that no longer exist, and people still fail at the tasks that matter. It suits product education and training leads with a course they have patched for years. Elvina maps each old lesson to keep, replace or retire with the evidence for each call, then drafts the new version beside the old one; rebuilding a lesson after its source changes is available now. Old completions stay on record.

Who this is for, and when

A product education lead at a mid-market payroll software company has patched the same admin-training course for three years. Two product redesigns later, half the screenshots are wrong, the lesson order reflects a menu that no longer exists, and support tickets show admins still cannot run year-end. She has to decide what to keep, what to replace and what to retire before drafting a new path.

How it works in Elvina

A rebuild plan maps retained, replaced and retired lessons before drafting a new learning path.

  • She loads the current course, the current product documentation from Company Knowledge, and the support-ticket themes that show where learning fails.
  • Elvina produces a rebuild map in Creation Studio: each existing lesson marked retain, replace or retire, with the evidence for each call.
  • She reviews the map, argues with a few decisions, and confirms the new lesson sequence.
  • The new course is drafted as a separate version; the old one and its learner history stay intact on the Learning Platform.
03

A worked example

A fictional company, Paylane Software, trains customer admins on its platform. The existing course has 18 lessons. Documentation v9 reflects the current interface. Support tickets from the last two quarters cluster around year-end filing and multi-state setup, neither of which the course covers well.

  • A map: seven lessons retained with new screenshots, six replaced, five retired because the feature moved or no longer exists.
  • Two new lessons added for year-end filing and multi-state setup, each tied to a documentation section.
  • A transition note listing 412 admins assigned to the old course and a proposal for who moves to the new one and when.
04

What to check before relying on it

Preserve the old version and learner history. Explain which assignments need a transition plan.

  • Every existing lesson has a retain, replace or retire decision with a written reason.
  • The old course version and all completion records remain accessible.
  • New lessons cite current documentation, not the prior course text.
  • A transition plan exists for learners with open assignments.
05

Where a person stays in charge

A rebuild map is a recommendation; the product education lead decides. Elvina does not delete the old course or migrate learners on its own, and it does not decide whether prior completions still count. Screenshots of the live product must be supplied or captured by the team. The transition schedule is a human decision.

WHO IT IS NOT FOR

Who this is not for, and when another tool fits

This is not the right fit if

  • Only the order is wrong and the content is still current.
  • You want the old course and its completion records deleted.
  • You cannot supply current screenshots or documentation for the product.

Another kind of tool may fit better

  • A course library, when the topics are general skills rather than your own procedures.
  • An instructional designer, for a large program with branching scenarios or live workshops.
