Practice defining a first business outcome
Pick a recurring team problem you can observe and turn it into one outcome sentence: who should be able to do what, from which approved source, checked by whom. The worked example below follows a fictional bakery chain.

- Goal
- Sample
- Offer
- Account
- Payment
Which problem keeps coming back in your team? I'll turn it into a sample lesson for one role.

A first business outcome, in short
A first business outcome is a single sentence naming the role that should do something differently, the behavior a person can watch, the approved source it comes from and who checks it. This practice page is for a manager or founder asked to try Elvina who wants to avoid starting from a topic. With that sentence in hand, Elvina drafts the first small piece, such as a one-page job aid or a short lesson, and a manager approves it before assignment, available now.
Example scenario with sample data.
What happens on the free demo
- Book 30 minutes. Pick a time with Elvina's team. The demo is free and runs on Zoom.
- Show the team your goal. Bring one role or one procedure. The team shows how Elvina would handle it, using sample materials.
- Agree on the next step. You leave with a plan for the first step and its price. Nothing reaches your team until you approve it.
Who this is for, and when
A manager or a founder who has been asked to try Elvina and wants to avoid the classic mistake of starting with a topic instead of an outcome. It starts with a blank planning doc. The trap is defining success as content produced rather than behavior observed.
How it works in Elvina
Write a one-sentence brief: 'Help new shift leads explain the opening exceptions using SOP v2, checked by the operations owner.' Then name the first artifact.
- Pick a recurring team problem you can see, such as new shift leads asking the same opening-routine questions every week.
- Write one sentence: who should be able to do what, using which approved source in Company Knowledge, checked by whom.
- Name the first artifact Creation Studio should draft, such as a job aid or a short lesson, and the reviewer who will edit it.
- Decide how you will observe the behavior after delivery in the Learning Platform, without counting page views.
A worked example
A bakery chain's district manager notices that new shift leads call her about opening exceptions three or four times a week. She writes: help new shift leads explain the opening exceptions using SOP v2, checked by the operations owner. The first artifact is a one-page job aid.
- The sentence names the role, the behavior, the source version and the reviewer.
- The operations owner agrees to check two openings per new lead in the first month.
- The observation is a count of exception calls per week, taken before and after the job aid is assigned.
What to check before relying on it
Self-check: could someone tell whether the task was done well without counting page views? If not, make the behavior and reviewer more specific.
- The outcome sentence names a role, a behavior, a source and a reviewer.
- Someone could tell whether the task was done well without an analytics dashboard.
- The first artifact is small enough to review in one sitting.
Where a person stays in charge
This is a practice exercise on the website and does not create a workspace, a source or an assignment. If you cannot say how you would notice the behavior changing, make the behavior and the reviewer more specific before moving on. Nothing here predicts a result; the observation is yours to take.
Who this is not for, and when another tool fits
This is not the right fit if
- You want Elvina to choose the outcome or predict the result for you.
- Nobody on your team can watch or count the problem you see.
- You need a full training plan for every role at once.
Another kind of tool may fit better
- Your HR or legal advisor, for documents that carry legal weight such as contracts and policies.
- A blank document, if one manager will fill this out once and nobody needs the training behind it.
