An Employee Handbook Template That Becomes First-Week Training

An employee handbook template lists your handbook's sections and gives each an owner, points for a lawyer or HR consultant to check, a review date and a first-week lesson. It is for small business owners writing or fixing their first handbook, by hand or with an employee handbook maker.

IN SHORT

An employee handbook template, in short

An employee handbook template is the section list behind the written guide to how your business works, giving each section an owner, a review date, a column of points for legal review and a first-week lesson. Small business owners fill it out, and a lawyer or HR consultant decides the policy wording. Elvina fills a sample section, such as breaks for front desk staff, with legal points as placeholders. From the handbook you approved she drafts lessons, job aids and checks for week one, available now. Staff asking questions in chat is planned, not available today.

It gives the structure, not the legal wording of your policies.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

What happens on the free demo

  1. Book 30 minutes. Pick a time with Elvina's team. The demo is free and runs on Zoom.
  2. Show the team your goal. Bring one role or one procedure. The team shows how Elvina would handle it, using sample materials.
  3. Agree on the next step. You leave with a plan for the first step and its price. Nothing reaches your team until you approve it.
01

When to use it

Use it for a first handbook, before you hire in another state, or when the old one no longer matches how you work. The EEOC notes that a small business may prevent discrimination without formal written policies. It adds that clear policies, shared, kept current and applied evenly, may help people follow your rules. Yet nobody learns a policy by signing for a long file.

How to fill it out

Start from the sections below and drop any that do not fit. For each one, say what it covers, name its owner and list the points that depend on the law where you operate. Leave the policy wording to your lawyer or HR consultant. Then decide what a new hire must learn from it in the first week, and how you will check it. Use the blank template below, one row per section. A fictional indoor climbing gym with front desk staff, route setters and youth coaches filled in the sample row for breaks.

  • Welcome and how we work: who is who and where to ask
  • Employment basics: equal opportunity, full-time and part-time status and any at-will statement
  • Hours, breaks, timekeeping, time off and leave
  • Conduct, the harassment policy and how to raise a concern
  • Safety, equipment and private information
  • The acknowledgment each employee signs

How to read the result

Read the legal column first: every row with an entry goes to your lawyer or HR consultant before anyone signs. The U.S. Department of Labor states that federal law does not require lunch or coffee breaks, so check your state's rules before writing that section. Then read the last column as your first-week plan, with breaks, safety and how to report a concern up front. Rows with no lesson stay as reference pages.

04

Where a person decides

Your lawyer or HR consultant checks each policy against federal law and the law of each state where you employ people. This template does not make a handbook legally correct, and Elvina gives no legal advice. The owner approves the text and keeps the signed acknowledgments. Once the approved handbook is in Company Knowledge, it becomes first-week training in three steps. Answering staff questions from it in Chat is planned, not available today.

  • Lessons: Creation Studio drafts a short lesson, a job aid and a check of understanding for each first-week section, available now
  • Approval: a manager approves each lesson, then assigns it on the Learning Platform and tracks progress, available now
  • End of week one: a readiness check is available now, and reminders for anyone behind are planned, not available today

WHO IT IS NOT FOR

Who this is not for, and when another tool fits

This is not the right fit if

  • You need policy wording that is legally correct for your state.
  • You want Elvina to write policies or check them against the law.
  • You only need signed acknowledgments, not training.

Another kind of tool may fit better

  • An employment lawyer or HR consultant, for the policy wording and state rules.
  • Your HR or payroll system, for storing signed acknowledgments with employee records.
