Turn a recording into a reviewable transcript
Transcribing turns a permitted recording, such as a senior engineer walking through a tool before she retires, into text with speaker names and timestamps. Knowledge managers and owners use it when a recording is the only record of how something is done. Elvina marks inaudible passages and uncertain figures instead of guessing, and a person confirms names and numbers. Uploading recordings to Company Knowledge and drafting lessons from a reviewed transcript are available now. The transcript becomes a trusted source only after its owner reviews it.

Who this is for, and when
A knowledge manager at an engineering consultancy has a 50-minute recording of a senior engineer demonstrating a load calculation tool before she retires. The recording is the only walkthrough that exists. He needs a transcript with speaker turns and timestamps so that excerpts can be linked back to the exact moment on screen, and he needs it before the engineer leaves.
How it works in Elvina
A demonstration transcript preserves speaker turns and timestamps for linking excerpts to the recording.
- The manager uploads the permitted recording to Company Knowledge with the language, the two speaker names and a note on the tool being demonstrated.
- Elvina produces a transcript with speaker labels and timestamps, marks inaudible passages, and leaves uncertain figures flagged rather than guessed.
- He reads the transcript next to the video, resolves the flagged figures with the engineer, and corrects two mislabeled speaker turns.
- He saves the reviewed transcript as a source with the engineer as owner, so later lessons can cite it by timestamp.
A worked example
A fictional consultancy, Meridian Structural Group, recorded a demonstration called Beam-Tool-Walkthrough with the retiring engineer and a junior colleague asking questions. The recording is 50 minutes, in English, with occasional keyboard noise. It will become the source for a four-lesson course.
- The transcript has 214 speaker turns with timestamps every turn, and 9 passages marked inaudible during keyboard noise.
- Six flagged load values were confirmed by the engineer in a 20-minute call and entered as corrections.
- The reviewed transcript became the owned source for the course, with each lesson linking to specific timestamps.
What to check before relying on it
Mark inaudible passages; do not guess names or quantities. Review before using the transcript as an authoritative source.
- Speaker labels match who was actually talking, spot-checked against the recording.
- Inaudible passages are marked, not filled in with plausible words.
- Names, quantities and units were confirmed by a person before the transcript became a source.
- Timestamps line up with the recording so an excerpt link lands on the right moment.
Where a person stays in charge
A transcript is a draft of what was said, not a statement of what is correct. Elvina does not guess through noise, and it cannot know that a number was misspoken. Recordings need the consent of the people in them, and a transcript becomes an authoritative source only after the owner reviews it in Company Knowledge.
Who this is not for, and when another tool fits
This is not the right fit if
- The people in the recording have not agreed to it.
- You need a verbatim legal record of a meeting.
- The audio is mostly noise and nobody can confirm what was said.
Another kind of tool may fit better
- A court reporter or a professional transcription service, for legal or medical records.
- A meeting notes tool, when you only need a summary of a call.
