Building a learning path, in short
A learning path is an ordered set of lessons, practice and checks that takes someone from a new role to doing it unsupervised, with a manager deciding when they are ready. It fits district and store managers who promote or hire into the same role often and today hand over a stack of files. Elvina proposes the order, marks prerequisites and drafts missing lessons from approved sources, and assigning the path by role with progress by person is available now.

Who this is for, and when
A district manager for a coffee chain promotes baristas to shift lead about once a month. Each new lead gets a stack of PDFs and a shadow shift, then figures out the rest alone. He wants a sequence that starts with opening basics, moves through supervised practice, and ends with a check on how they handle a broken espresso machine or a no-show, with him deciding when they are ready to run a shift solo.
How it works in Elvina
A new shift lead progresses from opening basics to supervised practice and an exception-handling check.
- He lists the shift-lead tasks, marks which ones are prerequisites, and points Elvina to the approved sources in Company Knowledge for each.
- Elvina proposes a path in Creation Studio: lessons in order, practice steps between them, and a final exception-handling check.
- He marks which items are required and which are optional, and names himself as the manager who signs off at the end.
- The path is assigned on the Learning Platform, and progress shows which stage each new lead has reached.
A worked example
A fictional chain, Copper Kettle Coffee, promotes two baristas to shift lead at its Denver stores. Sources are the Opening and Closing Standard, the Cash Handling Policy, and an Equipment Fault Guide. The path has five stages and one supervised-practice block that a store manager must confirm.
- A path that goes from opening routine, to cash handling, to a supervised close, to equipment faults, and ends with a scenario check on a staffing shortage.
- Required items are marked as such; the optional latte-art module sits outside the completion rule.
- The district manager sees both trainees' stage in one view and confirms the supervised practice for one of them.
What to check before relying on it
Separate required and optional work. Let the owner decide what evidence permits independent work.
- Each lesson in the path links to a source with an owner and version.
- Prerequisites cannot be skipped; the next lesson opens only after the prior one is complete.
- Required and optional items are labeled distinctly on the learner's screen.
- The manager sign-off step is visible and recorded with a date.
Where a person stays in charge
Completing the path is evidence, not a promotion decision. Elvina tracks progress and completion but does not judge whether someone can run a shift; the district manager decides based on the supervised practice. The path structure is drafted for review and can be changed before or after assignment.
Who this is not for, and when another tool fits
This is not the right fit if
- You need the promotion decision made for you, since the path is evidence and not a verdict.
- The role has no written procedures yet and nobody can approve sources.
- You want a catalog of general leadership courses.
Another kind of tool may fit better
- A course library, when the topics are general skills rather than your own procedures.
- An instructional designer, for a large program with branching scenarios or live workshops.
