Removing a lesson section, in short
Removing a section deletes one headed block from a lesson, usually a duplicate left behind by an older draft, while any sentence that appears nowhere else is kept. Technical writers and trainers use it when a lesson repeats itself and other lessons link into it. Elvina points out inbound links, prerequisite references and paragraphs unique to that section, so you move what must survive before confirming. Editing lessons by hand, with a saved revision you can go back to, is available now.

Who this is for, and when
A technical writer at a medical device distributor notices that a cold-chain lesson repeats its introduction twice, once from an older draft. The duplicate contains one unique escalation note that must survive. She wants the redundant section gone and the note kept, with links from other lessons still working.
How it works in Elvina
A duplicated introduction is proposed for removal while its unique escalation note is retained.
- Open the lesson in Creation Studio, select the section, and choose Remove.
- Elvina shows inbound links, prerequisite references and any paragraph that appears nowhere else.
- Move the unique paragraph to the surviving section before confirming.
- A revision is saved so the removal can be reversed, and the reviewer approves the updated lesson.
A worked example
A fictional distributor, Meridian Device Supply, maintains a lesson called Cold Chain Handling. It carries two sections titled Why This Matters. The second one duplicates the first except for a three-sentence note on escalating a temperature excursion, which the writer keeps.
- The duplicate section was removed and the escalation note now sits at the end of the first section.
- Two cross-references from a receiving lesson were updated to point at the surviving heading.
- The prior revision remains available for comparison.
What to check before relying on it
Check cross-references and accessibility headings. Keep a recoverable revision instead of deleting unrelated material.
- Cross-references resolve after the removal.
- Heading sequence has no gap or repeated level.
- Unique content was retained somewhere visible.
- A recoverable revision exists.
- Reading order still makes sense from start to finish.
Where a person stays in charge
Elvina does not merge two sections into one or judge on its own which paragraph is unique enough to keep; it highlights candidates for a person to decide. Removing a section does not remove the lesson or its assignments. Confirm with the content owner before deleting anything referenced by a compliance record.
Who this is not for, and when another tool fits
This is not the right fit if
- You want two sections merged into one rewritten text.
- You expect Elvina to judge which paragraph is worth keeping.
- A compliance record cites the section and its owner has not agreed to the change.
Another kind of tool may fit better
- Your current authoring tool, if one designer already builds every course by hand and the team is happy with it.
- A shared drive, when people only need to find a file rather than learn a task.
